♪ hello and welcome to "comunidad del valle" on a special occasion. i'm damian trujillo and we are here at the vault ultralounge in downtown san jose. thank you to the generosity of mauriceio for allowing us to record this segment with you this afternoon. with me are the voices of latin rock. they do not need their names mentioned. we know who they are. with me also is rudy medina, the nephew of cesar chavez.
rudy, back to our show. >> thanks, damian. thank you for having us. >> the reason we're here, we're having a fund-raiser for the chavez family vision, your organization, but also to promote the cesar chavez memorial walk through downtown san jose. tell us about that. >> that's true, damian. we're having the cesar chavez memorial walk this saturday on march 28th, starting at mexican heritage plaza, 8:00, early in the morning. get there, register, walk along a real historical route. each location that we have has significance to the chavez leg and i san jose. we'll be giving out free tickets to win bikes that were given to us by the latino peace officer's association. and we have another sponsor of ours, yellow checker cab, who gave up all the backpacks. when you register, you'll get that, but you'll also get a chance to really understand and see what significance city of san jose and the chavez legacy have as a joint union. >> reflect on that chavez legacy for us, if you will. because his birthday is coming up, and we all honor him in our
own way, but reflect on the passing of your uncle and what it's meant to this country, to this world since then. >> well, you know, it's been a tremendous loss, but what it did do is it really helped unify the community. and i think with the chavez family vision, with the voices of latin rock and with our other sponsors and the city of san jose and nbc bay area, we've been able to really solidify his legacy and continue it, because it's one thing for you to just think of the person, but it's better to think of what they did, and how their legacy lives on. and what we do all together to promote that legacy. he had a tremendous amount of impact on a lot of people, and so we're all here to share it. and that's why the memorial walk is so important. that's why his birthday celebration is so important. that's why we celebrate it with a breakfast every year. >> all right. this show is going to re-air at a future date, so you might be too late in watching -- or hearing about this walk that we're having in downtown san jose, but we wanted to entertain you tonight with some great

of poems and wrote this for a girl who broke my heart. and to this day, she doesn't know i wrote this song for her. >> are you amazed at the response that song has received, even to this day, they're playing it over and over. your residuals are probably piling up. >> i hope the residuals are piling up. actually, it's like it's really funny, because when you do a song and it's from your heart, you never really know how it's going to come out. it's great how people enjoy the song and over the years it has lasted the test of time and it's been played everywhere. weddings. >> we'll hear that. let me get behind you. also with me us is legendary jorge santana. carlos santana lived in your shadow growing up, correct? >> all the time. it's been very hard. i don't know how he manages.
tell us who you brought here tonight. >> through the grace of abel sanchez, i'm here because he's always attending this event for cesar chavez and earlier he reminded me we've been doing this since '85 with the post office. abel decided to put this unit together called richard bean and we have got monso on base. we've got marcos percussion, a percussionist for war. and we have gary on keyboards who's helping us. and most of us are here because of abel's effort to put us together and come in here and to join the celebration. >> it's all in the memory of the legacy of cesar chavez. >> i would also like to mention at the saturday event, we're also having gabriel amanso here,
